“Creativity is intelligence having fun.”

Hi, I’m Alan King a Toronto designer/developer
specializing in creating stylish, easy-to-use services for the print and digital world.

Website Design and Development

I build WordPress sites (like the one you’re looking at) but I also have years of experience coding websites from the ground up using HTML and CSS.

Posters, brochures, flyers. You name it.

Line drawings. Cartoons. Digital renderings.

(Yes, that’s an illustration above, created digitally using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.)

Memorable images and identity programs.

What do I do?

I’m a graphic designer who creates and develops websites, marks up pages, specifies typography, prepares pre-press, illustrates, creates logos and writes.

My background is in print advertising and newspaper design. I’ve done book covers, brochures, flyers and more posters and logos than I can count. I’ve also worked as a freelance illustrator for magazines like Time, Macleans and Readers’ Digest.

For the last eight years, I’ve been designing websites, usually from the ground up – building wireframes and writing code. But recently I’ve been using WordPress because with a little training, clients can make changes to the site themselves. I use templates configured to fit their particular style and message.

I’ve built small personal and business websites as well as monster sites – though if you’re IBM I’m probably not the designer you want. And (full disclosure) I’m not really into grunge, but I’m happy to take just about any other graphic design project.

I’ve also done my fair share of writing for newspapers and magazines, so you can count on me to spot the grammar and spelling mistakes that inevitably crop up. In a pinch, I’ll even write the stuff myself.

What’s the process?

Easy, peasy.

First, you talk. I listen and take notes. You tell me about your business and what your needs are. I buckle down and stare at the wall until inspiration strikes. I send you ideas and sketches. We talk some more. Maybe a few more concepts. Then we hook up (metaphorically) on Basecamp or Google Docs so we can keep track of what each of us is up to.

We agree on the concept and direction. I tweak, you tweak. And finally, we get something everyone is deliriously happy with. Off it goes, another triumph of creative prestidigitation.

If it’s a website, I have a list of steps that have to be taken to get it up and running but there’s no need to get into that here. Suffice it to say, I’ve done it often enough to know what needs to be done and in what order.

I work hard. I play well with others. I make deadlines. I return phone calls. I’m kind to animals. Hey, what’s not to like?

Just so you know.

If it’s a big job, we arrange a payment schedule. If it’s medium or small, it’s 50% up front and the remainder when the work is completed to your satisfaction.
